families and effectively collaborate with the healthcare team.

DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to develop basic understanding of the principles and standards of mental health nursing and skill in application of nursing process in assessment and care of patients with mental health disorders.

Objectives/Competencies

COMPETENCIES: On completion of the course, the students will be competent to

1. Trace the historical development of mental health nursing and discuss its scope.

2. Identify the classification of the mental disorders.

3. Develop basic understanding of the principles and concepts of mental health nursing.

4. Apply the Indian Nursing Council practice standards for psychiatric mental health nursing in supervised clinical settings.

5. Conduct mental health assessment.

6. Identify and maintain therapeutic communication and nurse patient relationship.

7. Demonstrate knowledge of the various treatment modalities and therapies used in mental disorders.

8. Apply nursing process in delivering care to patients with mental disorders.

9. Provide nursing care to patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders based on assessment findings and treatment/therapies used.

10. Provide nursing care to patients with mood disorders based on assessment findings and treatment/therapies used.

11. Provide nursing care to patients with neurotic disorders based on assessment findings and treatment/ therapies used.

PRACTICE COMPETENCIES: On completion of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Assess patients with mental health problems/disorders

2. Observe and assist in various treatment modalities or therapies

3. Counsel and educate patients and families

4. Perform individual and group psychoeducation

5. Provide nursing care to patients with mental health problems/disorders

7. Observe the assessment and care of patients with substance abuse disorders in de-addiction centre.

Introduction:

A community may be defined in many different ways. one definition of community is 'a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. Culture,ethnicity,age,gender,sexuality all of these can be characteristics which define a community. 

Community health nursing is a population focused community oriented approach aimed at health promotion of an entire population and population of disease,disability and premature death in a population. 

Concept of community: 

A community is a collection of people who share some important features of their lives. It can be society of people holding common rights and previlage sharing interests, living under same laws and regulations. 

The function of any community includes its members of collectives sense of belonging and their shared identity, values, norms, communication and common interests and concerns.

Description:

Child Health Nursing is the art and science of giving nursing care to children from birth through
adolescence with emphasis on the physical growth, mental, emotional and psycho-social
development. The department actively participates in training the students to identify the normal
growth and development of children and deviation from the normal and do research in the field
of child health nursing. We train our nursing students to develop in-depth knowledge, skill and
right attitude to function as neonatal and pediatric nurses to provide holistic nursing care to the
sick and critically ill children at any given setting.

Objectives/Competencies

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Explain the modern concept of child care and the principles of child health nursing.
2. Describe the normal growth and development of children in various age groups.
3. Explain the physiological response of body to disease conditions in children.
4. Identify the health needs and problems of neonates and children, plan and implement
appropriate nursing interventions.
5. Identify the various preventive, promotive and rehabilitative aspects of child care and apply
them in providing nursing care to children in the hospital and in the community.

Goal of the department: 

Obstetrical and gynaecological nursing department is dedicated to assist students in developing expertise and in depth understanding in the field of obstetric and gynaecological nursing. The basic motto is to help students to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and to develop knowledge and skills in rendering nursing care to normal and high risk pregnant women during antenatal, natal and post natal periods in hospitals and in community settings. It also helps students to develop skills in managing normal and high risk neonates and participate in family welfare programmes. The goal of the department is to mould students as an independent midwifery practitioner, as it will further enable them to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of obstetric and gynaecological nursing.

1. Trends in the field of midwifery, obstetrics and gynaecology. 

2. The popultion dynamics and indicators of maternal and child health. 

3. The concepts of biophysical, psychological and spiritual aspects of normal pregnancy, labor and puerparium. 

4. The comprehensive nursing care to women during reproductive period and newborns. 

5. The concepts of family centered nursing care and nursing process approach. 

6. The identification and analyzation of the deviations from normal birth process and refer appropriately. 

7. The pharmacological agents their effects during pregnancy, child birth, puerparium, lactation and role of nurse. 

8. The counseling of adolescents, women and families on issues pertaining to pregnancy, child birth and lactation. 

9. The complementary and alternative in obstetric and gynaecological nursing. 

10. The evidence based practice and identify areas of research. 

11. The recent advancements in contraceptive technology and birth control measures. 

12. The legal and ethical issues pertaining to obstetric and gynaecological nursing. 

13. The epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and diagnostic assessment of women in obstetrica and gynaecological conditions and how to counsel womwn and families. 

14. The care of high risk newborn and how to identify and manage obstetrical and neonatal emergencies. 

15. The use of technology and various diagnostic, therapeutic modalities in managing obstetrical, gynaecological and neonatal care. 

16. The handling of varios equipment used in this field.
